Pre-Conference Firewise Communities Workshop

Pre-Conference Firewise Communities Workshop (9 May 2011)

This one day workshop is for people who have an interest in creating Firewise Communities within wildland fire-prone landscapes. The course, which was developed in the USA and adapted for southern Africa, will lead participants through ways to improve safety at the wildland/urban interface, integrate Firewise concepts into community and disaster mitigation planning and give examples of how to facilitate and nurture local partnerships for improved community decision making. It is aimed at Fire Protection Officers, forestry personnel, planners, and conservancy or community leaders. Presented jointly by USA and SA trainers as a "hands-on" course under the SAUSA plan, it is an internationally accredited course and participants successfully completing the workshop will be qualified to train other groups in their area, using the course materials supplied.

Kruger Tour

Scientific Post Conference Tour to the Kruger National Park

The legendary Kruger National Park (KNP) in South Africa is a 2 million hectare savanna conservation wilderness area that showcases some of Africa's unique biodiversity and landscapes. KNP is home to an impressive number of species: 507 species of birds, 336 trees, 147 mammals, 114 reptiles, 49 fish and 34 amphibians. The park today not only protects wildlife (flora and fauna) but is also the leader and hub of key scientific research and demonstrates an active role in management of the area based on scientific outcomes. Fire research in KNP began in 1950's and the park has a wealth of ongoing fire research and experiments.
